A big difference maker
Tommy Tuohy delivers
It was all so obvious when Brophy high school took the floor for their first game at Q1 Rollerplex. Tommy Tuohy was the consumate leader, directing his troops on both offense and defense. And then he backed up his bark as if it were another day at the office with more assists during the tournament than any other player in the division. Tommy's
influence and direction will be absolutely critical for Brophy to get into the big games and for making the plays that will win the big games.
Tommy Has been selected as the top Dawg featured high school player for his inspiring performance at the Q1 qualifier and for his inspirational leadership.
Schools break outLet the excitement begin
All high school teams seemed a little edgy, as if the single comfort they could find was putting their game on the floor and going all out. So grab a seat, get some popcorn and a drink and here we go with the beginning of another incredible and exciting high school season.
Brophy establishes the tempo
After the first 3 games into the high school division, it became not too surprisingly apparent, that anybody was going to have a cake walk through this division. Every school had its scoring ability and no team was allowed to score uncontested, as was the case last season when both state champions Prescott and Catalina Foothills established themselves early on and pretty much had no trouble scoring because of how deep their talent was. But this season, it looks as if the parity of school talent has evened out a bit. Havasu high school, who wound up winless in this tourney, played the top two schools, Brophy and Horizon, very tough, losing 2-4 and 3-5 respectively.
Team Chemistry
The important ingredient that will be the key to this season's top dawg at the state championships, will be team chemistry. Brophy displayed a tremendous amount of chemistry when they rallied around their unquestionable leader, most experienced player and unanimous '09 all state selection, senior Tommy Tuohy. Brophy was on the doorstep last season, as they had beaten Horizon in the round robin play, only to lose their bid to get to big game at state finals by losing to Horizon 7-3 in the Semi-Final to end their season. Ultimately, it was the Brophy Bronco defense that kept the puck out of their net that made the difference as they shut down the Horizon Huskies in the final 2-1.
Team Leadership
While Brophy and Horizon seemed to have an answer in their round-robin victories over Gila Ridge Black and Havasu, it was Gila Ridge and Havasu who were battling the short end of their rosters. Gila Ridge Black, having but one sub, had tremendous
contribution from both of their '09 all-state selections, Jesse Rooney (2 goals, 3 assists) and Jon Green (4 goals, 3 assists). Havasu, while also dealing with a short roster, received vital contribution from Jordan Ehgoetz (2 goals, 2 assists) and Grant Greeley (2 goals).
While it appears that Brophy and Horizon are well stocked and have decent depth down their rosters, teams will respond and will continue to elevate their games. Both Gila Ridge and Havasu come from programs with proud inline hockey traditions that will boost their confidence and pride as the season progresses.
Coming in at the Yuma qualifier will be Prescott high school, with returning Rubber magazine player of the year, Levi Wallace and top scoring sensation Joey Jimenez. Also, Yuma Catholic will be coming in with a very solid team and great school pride.
So just when you might have thought that everything was falling into place, more schools are stepping up and challenging the pace that both Brophy and Horizon have established.
