’Prescott takes state bragging rights for high school title
In spite of the fact that Prescott high school was loaded with scoring ability and had one great goalie in net, one would think that this group was ripe for an upset at state finals, which seemed to have been the story for this group of inline athletes on their club teams in the past. But this crew seemed to know what was at stake without pressing too hard and taking things too seriously. Prescott had the one ingredient that the other high schools could only chase. Experience in the big finale. Last season, it was Prescott who could only sit back and admire an excellent Centennial high school squad as Centennial took the state title from Prescott 7-5 after Prescott thought they had Centennial on the ropes for an upset. As it was, the top 4 scorers in the division were all from Prescott. It was the playmaking of Prescott’s Levi Wallace, however, that spearheaded a completely dominating performance. Wallace led all scorers with 6 goals and unbelievable 10 assists for the tournament. Prescott’s Joey Jimenez (10 goals, 4 assists), Mitch Eastman (10 goals, assists, 3 assists) and Jake Lund’s (8 goals, 5 assists) rounded out Prescott domination of the scoring board. Much of Prescott’s scoring success hinged greatly on the back of their excellent all state goalie, Connor McShane, who was reveling in perhaps his best performance ever at the state championships, who never let any other school seriously threaten Prescott’s lead in any game. Credit must be given to the Horizon Huskies who got into the championship finale with Prescott after a heartbreaking 2-3 round robin loss to the Brophy Broncos and a 2-2 tie with a fired up Gila Ridge Hawks team. Horizon finally found their mojo in the semi-finals where they took it to Brophy 7-3, ending Brophy’s hopes that they had Horizon’s number as well as a ticket to the championship game. Horizon’s rediscovery of their offense came none too soon as they had a date in the finals with Prescott. And after the first period, Horizon was making believers of their student body as Prescott clung to only a 2-1 lead. But the second period was owned by Prescott as they opened up the canons and fired away, taking the championship game 6-2 and a trip to the West Coast National championships in Corona, CA on May 23rd.
District Division
It was deja vu in the District division, with Foothills Southern Kings taking on Yuma Catholic Shamrocks. And other than the changing of a few players, it was a repeat of last season’s district championship game. High school scoring sensation and Foothills player, Michael Gonzalez, did not disappoint those who wanted to see an offensive scoring display from him as he put up 3 goals and 1 assist and snagged the top state scoring honors. It was actually a great team effort from Foothills as every rostered player on Foothills contributed to the offensive scoring total as Foothills triumphed over Yuma Catholic 6-2. Foothill’s Shea Taylor was the playmaker for the championship game with 3 assists. Yuma’s excellent forward and unanimous all state choice, senior Kyle Letendre, played his last high school game but did manage a goal in the contest as his intense, competitive drive will be hard to replace. Senior David Johnson, outstanding goalie for Yuma Catholic, went out in style as well, as he took outstanding goalie honors for the state championships.
